Elaine Houston McPhie Hessler

Oct. 2013

Elaine Hessler, age 92, passed away due to natural causes on October 12, 2013 at her home with her loving husband Delbert Hessler by her side.

Elaine was born May 27, 1921 in Monroe, Utah, and raised in a small farming community of Panquitch, Utah, being the first child of Earl Houston and Alma Worthen Houston. Her mother died when Elaine was 12 years old and since her father was often working out of town she basically raised her five younger brothers, Arthur, Jasper, R.G., Stanley and Jerry. She would regale us with stories of the boys' mischievousness.

She married Alvin Joseph Offret (deceased) and had three sons, Jerry (now deceased), Ron, and Dale. In 1959 she married George McPhie and combined her sons Ron and Dale with George's two youngest children, Don and Karen, and they all moved to Yakima, Washington. Elaine often recalled that when she registered the four children at Franklin Junior High School she told the registrar that she had one in the 9th grade, another in the 8th, one in the 7th and her other son in the 6th grade. The registrar laughed and commented on how busy she had been.

Elaine and George enjoyed the antics of teenagers as those four children grew into a blended family. Later, Elaine and George added another son, Michael McPhie, to the mix.

About five years after George passed away, she found her loving husband Delbert and the two enjoyed traveling and seeing the grandchildren.

At her 90th birthday party in Yakima, she was surrounded by family and friends who related their experiences with Elaine. Being a prankster herself, there were many tales of humorous events.

Elaine was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions of service. She was a very social person and fond of entertaining. She hosted many large and small gatherings in her home with family and friends.

Elaine was a family historian, having traced her family roots to royalty in Scotland. She published her family's history and made her research available to everyone.

Elaine leaves behind her husband Delbert Hessler. She was preceded in death by her son Jerry. She leaves behind her son Ron Offret and wife Ina of Anchorage, Alaska; her son Dale Offret of Coupeville, Washington, and her son Michael McPhie of Truckee, California. She was preceded in death by her stepson Don McPhie and stepdaughter Karen McPhie-Reynold. She also leaves behind George's daughter, Jeanine and Jim Thorne of Utah.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed.

There will be a time of visitation from 6-7 PM Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home. The Funeral Service is 11 AM Friday, October 18 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 705 S. 38th Ave. Burial will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Cemetery
