After his first wife's death, he was left with four small children. He married again to his wife's first cousin, Lola Ann Clawson. They were baptized into the Church in 1834/5 and soon moved four miles from Far West, Missouri. They experienced severe persecution while living in Missouri because of the church. In 1839 he executed an affidavit itemizing a bill of damages against the state of Missouri for loss and expenses incurred during the expulsion. Elihu moved his family east of Burton, Adams, Illinois, for several years. During this period, they lost three of their children. Following this they moved across Iowa to the Missouri River . Shortly before the first group moved out, Elihu 's youngest son, Joseph Brigham, was adopted by Brigham Young. Later that same year, Elihu and his family crossed the plains. His second wife died after their first winter in the valley. Elihu died of inflamation of the lungs three years later. Children of 1st wife: Lucinda, b. Nov 1812, Dryden, Tompkins, New York.
