Lois Maxine Chiles Cook, 89 of Orem, Utah passed away at her home in Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday, March 3, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.
Maxine was a 10 lb baby, born in a farmhouse in a small town South of Norwalk, Iowa on July 5, 1922 to George and Edith Chiles. She was the sixth of seven children. She lived on a farm and went to a one room school house for the first eight years. She loved school, spelling bees, and especially basketball, even making the college team. She was raised Methodist and came to Utah in 1942 where she was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on November 19, 1944.
Maxine was a spunky little brunette, that came to Utah and worked at Geneva Steel. She married Leland Eugene Cook on January 12, 1945 after his return from WWII. Together they had five beautiful children and later they divorced. She was a supportive, loving and dedicated mother whose pride and joy was her children and grandchildren. She was a woman of love and laughter, someone you could always count on to brighten your day. She truly was loved by everyone. Her love was also shown through cooking. You couldn't go visit without being fed delicious meals and desserts. She had a passion for sports since she was a child and that love continued through her life as she supported her children, grandchildren and favorite baseball, basketball and football teams. It wasn't uncommon to walk into her home where she would be watching one game on TV and listening to another game on the radio. Maxine was very independent, always keeping her yard, flowers and home beautiful. After her children were older she reentered the workforce for Skaggs, Osco, Payless, Rite Aid where customers and workers adored her. She retired in 2001, at 78 after 23 years of service. She enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren's homes. In 2009, she moved to Yuma, Arizona to be with family and enjoy the sunshine.
Maxine will be remembered for being a devoted and loving mother and a great friend to all. She is survived by one daughter and four sons: Dixie Larzalere of Yuma, AZ, John F. Cook (Linda) of Yuma, AZ, Harold Cook (Sheri) of Fresno, CA, Michael Cook (Pam) of Highland, UT, Thomas Cook (Lisa) of Orem, UT & Africa, 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-granddaughter, and a sister, Edna Arnold (Lynn) of Salt Lake City, UT.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10a.m. at the Orem Park 8th Ward, LDS Chapel, 114 South 400 West, Orem. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
