Marcella (Soelberg) Coker, 94, of Sioux City died , Sept. 23, 1997, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home. Services will be at First Lutheran Church. There will be private graveside services. Mrs. Coker was born Jan. 5, 1903, in Sioux City. She graduated from Central High School in 1921 and from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. with a bachelor of arts degree in 1926. She did post graduate studies at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1926 to 1928, and was employed at the same time by Associated Charities in Cleveland. She returned to Sioux City in 1928, and served on the staff of the Family Welfare Bureau for six years. From 1934 to 1937, she was employed by the Children Service in St. Paul, Minn., again returning to Sioux City where she became a social worker for the Family Welfare Bureau and later St. Monica's Home. She helped organize the Lutheran Welfare Society, serving as secretary. During World War II, she was assistant to the Red Cross field director at the Sioux City Air Base. She retired from a 40-year career in social welfare work on Feb. 1, 1968. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Altar Guild, the Golden Agers, where she was treasurer, the First Lutheran Church Women, the Sioux Viking Lodge, and the Siouxland Senior Center. Survivors include a sister, Bernice Hobart of Sioux City and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Milton and Oliver Soelberg and a sister, Lois Randall.
