Janet M. Waters, 83, formerly of Star Lake and Florida, passed away on October 4, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Malone.
Calling hours will be held at French Family Funeral Home, 4159 St. Hwy. 3, Star Lake on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9. Her funeral mass will be held at St. Hubert’s Catholic Church on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Janet will be buried next to her son, Rory, in the St. Hubert’s Catholic Cemetery.
Janet was born in Fine, NY on January 22, 1934 to the late Albert and Bessie (Wilcox) DeCosse. She graduated from the Clifton-Fine Central School, took classes at SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam, and Rutgers University and became the first Certified Alcoholism Counselor in New York State.
She worked as an Alcoholism Counselor for many years. She worked for St. Lawrence County, the Farm Cottage (now Hamilton Hall), St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center, Rose Hill, and retired from the Franklin County Correctional Facility in 1995.
Janet married Sgt. 1st Class Frank L. Waters on September 18, 1953. Together they fought the Korean Conflict (2 tours) and the Vietnam War (3 tours). Mr. Waters passed away on July 17, 1972. With her husband overseas so much, Mrs. Waters sold Avon products, tended bars (primarily the Windfall), and cleaned houses.
Janet had been an active, faithful, member in good standing of Alcoholics Anonymous since September 16, 1969. She enjoyed sitting in the sun and reading, swimming, riding her new bicycle, and did we mention READING?
She is survived by her daughter, Reneé Waters of Malone; two sons and their wives, Rick and Sue Waters of Potsdam, Rolf and Yvonne Waters of Slingerland, NY; and six grandchildren, Gabrielle, Kate, Beth, Jonathon, Erica, and Camron Waters.
She is predeceased by her parents and a son, Rory Waters.
