Early Life: Joseph "Joe" was born February 4, 1925, in La Verkin, Utah, to Harry Earl and Partha Ann Gubler Jackson. He was the third of five children: Jay, LaZaun, Joe, Earl and Mary. His father passed away when he was four years old. His baby sister, Mary, died the following year. When Joe was six years old, his mother remarried and the family moved to Springdale, Utah, where his youngest brother, Hal, was born. Joe lost his dominant left hand at eight years old due to gangrene caused by a compound fracture. At fifteen years old, he lied about his age, claiming to be seventeen, to get a job with the Civilian Conservation Corps working in Zion National Park. Joe graduated from Hurricane High School in 1943.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Immediately following graduation, he went to work with his uncle in a mining camp in Gabs, Nevada. During the last years of World War II, Joe worked at Hill Air Force Base as an airplane mechanic. He attended Utah State University for a year before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweden. After his mission, he attended and graduated from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in math. He spent the rest of his life teaching science and math. He met Marjorie Thompson in Reno, Nevada, where Mar was working as a speech pathologist. They were married in August of 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The first year of their marriage they lived in Sacramento, California, where their oldest daughter, Jana, was born. They moved to Monticello, Utah, where Joe D., Laurie, Dwight, and Dixon joined the family. Brooke was born when they spent a year in Granger, Utah, while Joe taught school in Tooele. In 1967, the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Joe and Mar taught school for the next 25 years. Ten years after retirement, Marjorie passed away in 1997. After many years of deteriorating health, Joe spent his final years in a memory care unit in Santaquin, Utah. He left this life October 2, 2017.
