Born on August 6th 1921 Alan was the youngest son of Thomas Philip and Laura Conaty (née Joyner), of 12 Elmwood Road, North Shields, Northumberland. He had five older brothers, Rutherford, John, Thomas, Philip and Adam and an older sister Ethel. In 1911, their father worked as a Shipwright in a shipbuilding yard.

Educated at the Western Board School, North Shields, he was employed as a builder's labourer before joining the Navy in 1940. Alan served on a cruiser for two and a half years and saw action in Hong Kong and Madagascar. May 1st 1941 saw Alan aboard a steam ship 'City of Cairo' bound from Liverpool to Rangoon, Burma.

Serving with 45 Royal Marine Commando he left Bexhill-on-Sea on the 12th January 1945 to participate in the war in Europe. Three days later he arrived at Oostende. During that month he was involved in the fighting and clearing of Maasbracht & Brachterbeek. The middle of February saw him fighting to the east of Roermond, then on to Schileberg and Venray.

On the 1st March 1945 his Commando Unit crossed the River Maas at Gennep and by evening they had entered Afferden where they encountered enemy shelling.

Captain John Day of 45 R.M. Commando recorded in the unit's war diary for the 1st March 1945:
"Moved to Afferden. Under command of 11th Armoured. Marine Conaty killed. Crossed River Maas."

Both his brothers served in the war, Rutherford in the Royal Navy and John in the Merchant Navy. Both survived the war.
