Pebworth Dies in Prison Hospital

Alva Pebworth
, 25, escaped prisoner from Granite, and who engaged in a pistol duel with Chief of police Will Jones on the highway out north of town Wednesday, August 13, when Chief Jones attempted to arrest him, is dead.

He died in the prison hospital at McAlester where he had been taken after being taken to St. Mary's Hospital Wednesday evening. Both men were shot several times. It is reported that a pistol wound in Pebworth's abdomen was the cause of his death, which occurred Friday, August 19, at 7:00 p.m.

He has been accused of other crimes, one of which was holding up and high-jacking Frank Polk and taking the Polk car the Sunday night before the above occurrence.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of his brother, Lee Pebworth, on Broadway, Sunday at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. Bond of Atoka.

Pallbearers were Alva Pebworth's father, four brothers, and his brother-in-law.

Burial was in Coalgate Cemetery.
