JOHN H. CARLSON DIES
Former Bellingham and Ferndale Resident Called.

MOUNT VERNON, Dec. 20. - John Helmer Carlson, of Harmony, passed away Sunday in a Seattle hospital, where he had been cared for during his last illness, and will be laid to rest Thursday afternoon, after services are held in the Swedish Baptist church, with Rev. A. H. Johnson officiating.
Born in Norway in 1867, Mr. Carlson came to the United States in 1888 and located in Oshkosh, Wis., moving from that city to Bellingham in 1891; then to Ferndale for a few years and in 1898 locating in Skagit county. He was married in 1889.
Purchasing a small piece of land in the farming district now spoken of as Harmony. Mr. Carlson cultivated his land, built his own home and barn and practically cleared his entire place. Being a carpenter, he built nearly all the homes in Harmony, including its first school house, where his daughter, Ruth, taught her first term of school a few years ago.
There are left to mourn his loss, the widow and three daughters, Mrs. Esther Parker, of Seattle; Ruth of this city, and Edna, now Mrs. Sam Econom, of Seattle. A son, Elmer, was reported missing while on the field of action in France during the war, his death saddening the father's declining years. Mr. Carlson was one of the most industrious and best known men of the Skagit county farmers and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
