James Looker married Phebe Hedden on November 5, 1807 in Essex Co., NJ. Based on his age (63 years) in the 1850 census (Newton Twp., Cumberland Co., PA), James was born ca. 1787 in the state of New Jersey. He cannot be located in the 1860 census, so he probably died between 1850 and 1860 in Cumberland Co., PA.

In the 1810 census, James Luker [sic], is living with his wife (no children) in New York City, Ward 5. A James Looker is listed in the 1811 September Tax List in Newark Twp., Essex Co., NJ. No further record of James has been located until he appears living with his son (Edmund) in 1850.

The father of James Looker was probably Isaac Looker, who died in 1822 in Essex Co., NJ. An 1884 biographical sketch of Edmund Looker states that his grandfather died when he was 11 years age, thus ca. 1822. The following record exists: New Jersey Index of Wills, Inventories, Etc., Vol I (1912), ESSEX COUNTY, page 425: Looker, Isaac, 11416G. Inv. 1822. These probate records show that Joseph Looker was the Administrator; no other children are mentioned in the proceedings.

James and Phebe Looker were the parents of at least three children:
1. Margaret Looker
2. Edmund Burke Looker
3. Charles Henry Looker

-----

Note: The HEDDEN biographical reference (see Phebe's memorial) states: "Phebe, born May 15, 1791, died May 24, 1831; married Charles [sic] Looker; children: Charles and Margaret. So we know that Charles is a son. Edmund is not mentioned in this reference as a son, but when he married for the third time, he listed his parents' names as James and Phebe Looker, thus confirming that he was also a child of James and Phebe. Nothing is known about daughter, Margaret Looker.

It is interesting to note the parallels between the brothers, Edmund and Charles. They were both born within a few years of each other in New York City, living in bordering townships in Cumberland Co., PA in 1840, same occupations (shoemaker) and the names of their children were reciprocal: Edmund named his oldest son, Charles; Charles named his second son, Edward (listed as Edmond in the 1860 census).

NOTE: This James Looker is NOT the son of Governor Othneil Looker (1757-1845). That James Looker died in October 1843 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH (Probate records filed in Hamilton Co., OH, dated 1 November 1843: "Administration granted unto Rachel H. Looker and Othniel Looker, Jr.") These probate records are online at Ancestry. As stated above, "our" James Looker was living in 1850, enumerated in the 1850 census with his son (Edmund) in Cumberland Co., PA.
