In his early youth he moved with his parents to McPherson County, Kans.
Having been deprived of his mother, who died when he was but two years old, he was left to the care of his grandparents in whose home he grew to manhood.
On Jan. 16, 1903 he was united in marriage to Minnie Unruh. Through 43 years and 29 days they mutually shared their joys and sorrows. God blessed their home with two sons and six daughters. After their first two years of married life on a farm north of Durham, they moved into the town where he took up the trade of a carpenter. They lived in Durham for nearly 18 years. Due to the hard physical strain he decided to take up automobile sales and repair. In October 1923, he with his family moved to Canton, Kansas, where he continued to this business until April 1945, when due to failing health he retired from his work.
Mr. Schmidt's life was marked with hard labor, honesty and faithful effort to provide for his family.
He spent his last months in his home. His health continued to fail. The last two months he endured considerable suffering. During this time he often expressed his regret for his failing of past human limitations.
One son, one daughter, eight brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, one son, W. C. Smith of Canton; and five daughters: Mrs. E. M. Yost, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Boyd Whitlock of Council Grove, Kansas; Mrs. Shirley Richards, Marion, Kansas; Mrs. Cleo Thomas of Wilmington, Calif.; Mrs. L. E. Morris of Assaria., Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 2 brothers and 2 sisters; 2 half-brothers and 7 half-sisters.
Funeral services were held Feb. 18, 1946. Short services were held at the home in Canton, and at the LoneTree Church, Galva, Kansas at 1 o'clock, where Bro. Jonas B. Koehn opened with introduction and prayer, followed by Bro. Jesse Johnson reading scriptures Psalms 39:4 and 90:12, and speaking therefrom. Closing remarks and prayer by Bro. John A. Becker.
For the benefit of the residents of Canton, short services were also held in the Baptist Church in Canton. Interment was made in the Canton Cemetery.
