Mr. Richard H. O'Dell, 74, of Villa Rica, Ga., passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at his residence.
Richard was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Lincoln, the son of the late Myrtice Crump O'Dell and Clarence O'Dell. He was Catholic by faith and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Carrollton, Ga. Richard made a career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., spending 35 years with the company. During his tenure with Goodyear, he had the opportunity to travel the world, working in South Africa, Wolverhampton, England, and Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and later earning a Master's Degree in Secondary Education. Richard played football for the Legendary Bear Bryant at Alabama. In 1960, Richard received an Athletic Achievement Award for his game-winning field goal against Georgia Tech.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Mount O'Dell of 54 years; sons and daughters-in-law, Hal and Carol O'Dell, Oklahoma City, Okla., Ben and Belinda O'Dell, Eudora, Kan., and Chad and Tonya O'Dell, Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Ian, Jacob, Kennedy, Chloe, Emma, Lilly and Turner O'Dell, Cooper and Carson Yates and Ben King; sisters, Marie Alred, Indian Land, S.C., Bonnie Gosdeck, Villa Rica, Ga., Linda Swanson, Musella, Ga., and Peggy Shambaugh, Peyton, Colo.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Herchel, John and Jimmy O'Dell.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated, and a memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Gray Brown-Service Funeral Home in Anniston. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the memorial service. Interment will follow the service in Plum Springs Cemetery.
