The Rev. Stephen G. Dressell

HARTFORD — The Rev. Stephen G. Dressell, M.S., 85, a missionary of Our Lady of La Salette, died Friday, March 9, 2007, at Hartford House, Hartford. He was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Waterbury, son of the late Bernard and Rose (O'Brien) Dressell, and attended schools in Waterbury before entering the La Salette Apostolic School in Hartford in 1935. He began his Novitiate in Bloomfield in 1940 and made first profession of vows on July 2, 1941. He continued his studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Altamont, N.Y. and Ipswich, Mass., and was ordained a priest on March 25, 1947.
After ordination, Father Dressell volunteered for Burma and was assigned to Akyab, Prome and Thayetmyo, where he labored under difficult conditions for 28 years. He left Burma in September 1975 for a series of assignments that took him to the state of Georgia and the countries of Argentina and England. When he returned to the United States in 1989, Father Dressell was appointed to team ministry at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Hartford, for a brief time. Before being appointed senior priest in residence at Our Lady of Sorrows, Father Dressell served as chaplain at the Veteran's Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill for six years. Since then he had resided at Hartford House on New Park Avenue.
In addition to his La Salette community, Father Dressell is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Monnerat of Wolcott and Mrs. Kathleen Brennan of Longmeadow, Mass.; two Sisters of Mercy, Sisters Virginia and Rita, both of Waterbury; and a nephew, the Rev. Brian W. Monnerat, pastor of St. Matthew Church, Forestville. He was predeceased by a brother, Bernard, and a Sister of Mercy, Sister Barbara.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Monday, March 12, at 10 a.m. at the La Salette Chapel, 85 New Park Ave. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery. Calling hours were held Sunday at Hartford House.
