Elgie M. Netto
May 19, 1929 - September 20, 2017

Elgie Netto was born on May 19, 1929, in Albany, OR, to Lucille and Virgil Williams, and passed on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, in Fresno, CA. Her family moved to California where she was raised on a dairy farm with her brother, Raymond, in the heart of a prominent dairy region in the Santa Rosa, CA area. During her upbringing, she was surrounded by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, that she loved dearly throughout her life. This early foundation of love and support would be a key source of strength in Elgie's life due to a spinal injury at birth that partially impaired some of her basic motor skill functions. Doctors said as a child she would never walk or live past the age of 20 years old. Her close family upbringing provided her with constant support in finding alternative ways to do all the things necessary to be just like other children despite her disability. She was able to walk and thrived as a child. Elgie went on to finish at the top of her class in high school, and then went on to college at University of California, Davis, where she earned her Bachelors degree in Modern Dietetics. During her time at Davis, she meet the love of her life, George Netto, at an Air Force Dance in 1953. George went off to the Korean Conflict but they kept in constant communication by love letters during their time apart, and then were married on January 21, 1956. Elgie and George had four children and settled down in Caruthers, CA in 1969. She was a loving mother and wife in addition to the numerous other duties as a member of the Catholic Women's Society of Caruthers for many years. Elgie was a loving grandmother to nine grandchildren, whom she was particularly proud of. Upon retirement, they moved to Fresno, CA in 1990, where they spent the rest of their years traveling to visit family and friends, going to Fresno State football games, and enjoying her life long passions of reading and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Netto; and her grandson, Nicholas Slenders. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Slenders and husband Tony of Madera, CA; daughter, Tess Phillips and husband Doug of Easton, CA; daughter, Gloria Netto of Visalia, CA; son, Steve Netto and wife Margaret of San Carlos, CA; eight grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Reid, Danielle and husband Paul, Gina, Tina and husband Zachery, Travis and wife Vanessa Rose, Alexander, and Mitchell; and three great-grandchildren, Xita, Farrah, and Aoife. The family would like to thank Mike and Ida Dimas of Casa San Dimas elderly care for all their kind and devoted care. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Peter's Chapel and Cemetery, 264 N Blythe Ave, Fresno, CA 93706, on Wednesday September 27, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held after at Piccadilly Inn, 2305 W. Shaw Ave., Fresno, CA 93711. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes are to make donations to Hinds Hospice 2490 W. Shaw Ave., Suite 101, Fresno, CA 93711.
