Lewis Edward Matthews was born in the state of Missouri, May 20, 1878. Coming with his parents to Le Grande, Oregon, at an early age. When a young man, he moved to the Bickleton district where he lived for a number of years. On November 8, 1899, he was married to Cora B. Ransier, also of Bickleton. For six years he homesteaded in the Rattlesnake district, after which he moved to Grandview, Wash., where he has been a resident for the past 40 years. In 1919 he started working for the Reclamation and was retired two years ago because of ill health.

Mr. Matthew's death occured Friday, August 3, at 2:20 a. m., while visiting his son at Kent, Wash. His survivors are: His wife, Mrs. Cora B. Matthews of Grandview; his sons, Leslie E. Of Kent, Wash.; Oliver R. Of Auburn; and Edwin H. Of Santa Fe, New Mexico; his daughters, Mrs. Lela Miller, of Mabton, Wash.; Mrs. Betty Cleveland of Kent, Wash.; Mrs. Lucretia Norton of Grandview, Wash.; and Mrs. Hazel Wilson, deceased, and 11 grandchildren, two of whom are in the service of their country. Mr. Matthews was a member of the local Church of the Nazarene.
