Born in Antlers, he was the son of Osborne and Louise (McGaugh) Nelson. He graduated from Savanna High School and entered the United States Army in 1949. He married Helen M. Zachary on Dec. 10, 1952, in Charleston, Ark. while in the service. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict and received numerous awards including a Bronze Star medal, Republic of Vietnam Congressional Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, three Overseas Service Bars and a Good Conduct Medal. He also earned an Expert Rifle award. He continued in the Army until retiring as a First Sergeant with 20 years of service in 1969 from Fort Sill. After retirement he attended Cameron University and began his career with Arkla Gas Company in Lawton. He was transferred to the McAlester office of Arkla in 1981 and lived in Krebs and worked here until retirement from Arkla as a field supervisor in 1992 after 23 years of service. After his son, Stephen, preceded him in death in 1990, he moved to a home north of McAlester where he and his wife raised seven grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church of McAlester. He was preceded in death by his parents, Osborne and Louise Nelson; a daughter, Andrea Denise Nelson in 1972 and a son, Stephen D. Nelson in 1990.
