Sarah was the daughter of John Chilton (1797–1845) and Lydia Woods (1800–1871).

She was married to Thomas Thompson (1834–1883) and they had four known children;
William Wade (1853–1934)
Artimissa Jane (1856–1933)
Sarah Melvina (1859–1941)
Mary Lydia (1867–1940)

She was a sister of Lydia Chilton Thompson and James Chilton who married Thomas's brother William and sister Mary respectively.

Her husband was buried in a plot at the old family farm in Newton Township, Shannon County, Missouri.
