George Edward Lawson  of the Bethel community passed away September 24th 2017. Mr. Lawson was a beloved dad and grandfather; he reached the young age of 93.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Stanley Taylor officiating. Burial was in the T. Chitwood Cemetery.
He was born January 4th 1924 in Rockholds KY to Martha Foley and Tom Henry Lawson. He grew up with sisters; Ethel, Ida, Hettie, Pruda, Mary, Thelma and a brother, Richard. He served in the Navy during WWII as a gunner.  After leaving the military, he married Darlene Brown and had a son, Robert Lawson. While his son was still an infant he lost Darlene; he would never forget her.  He would later meet what he would describe as a “red headed woman”, Norma Creekmore, they married and remained side by side for 60 years until her passing in April 2016. George and Norma had one daughter Hanna, who cared for him until the end.
He spent many years driving machinery in above ground mines, working night shift and running a farm in the daytime.  Although he never completed school, he continued to educate himself in veterinary care of cattle, often helping others in the community with injured animals or delivering calves at all hours. He always said a lot of people don’t have the money to pay for help but if you are willing to help a farmer they will repay the favor. He worked hard to provide for his family.
Mr. Lawson lived to see three grandchildren Rhea Elizabeth Mahala Gilreath, Sheena LaShann Pitzer, and George Travis Lawson grow to adults. He sadly endured the death of his son, Robert, in 2008.  He spent many years working and farming side by side with Rhea’s husband Ben Gilreath and loved him as a grandson.  He watched his great grandchildren Maxwell Parker Gilreath, Lyla Mae Pitzer, and Wyatt Rush Pitzer run, play, and make mud pies and loved every minute of it.
On a good day George could be found sitting on his porch watching the cows graze and the garden grow. Hay season was his favorite time of year, he loved to see Ben and Donnie bringing loads of hay up the driveway. He strived to live and remain independent. He was a long time member of Hayes Creek Church of God and a Christian.
He will be missed as he is loved fiercely by his family that he leaves behind, Hanna Wright and Donnie Neal, Rhea, Ben, and Max Gilreath, Sheena, James, Lyla, and Wyatt Pitzer along with many other close family, friends, and church members.
