A native of High Point, N.C., he had been a resident of Newport News for 60 years. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a supervisor after 45 years.
He was a member of Parkview Baptist Church.
Mr. Coltrane was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Davis Coltrane; and his parents, Chester Garfield and Pearl Rush Coltrane.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Ronald D. Coltrane of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Doug, Aaron, Anne and Heather.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, by the Rev. Lawrence J. Biermann and Dr. R. Furman Kenney, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
