ALFRED -- Edith M. Cook, 85, of Alfred and formerly a longtime resident of Kennebunk, died Feb. 3, 2007, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
She was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Kennebunk, a daughter of Eugene and Dora (Smith) Drown and attended Kennebunk schools. On Feb. 14, 1941, she married Joseph T. Cook and shared 21 years of marriage before his death in 1962. Mrs. Cook made her home in Kennebunk until moving to Alfred to be near her sister in 2005.
Mrs. Cook was a hard worker who was employed with the York Heel Company in Biddeford and for many years worked at Courtney Cleaners in Kennebunk, retiring at the age of 80. She was devoted to her family and would be readily available to drive her many nieces and nephews to special activities and events. She enjoyed needlework, flower gardening and driving down by the beach each day. The family camp in South Casco was a place to gather with family and friends.
Family survivors include her daughter Joan Cook and husband Stephen Canders of Kennebunk; one sister, Eugena Brown of Alfred; many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Elliot Drown, Raymond Drown and Clarence Drown, and one sister, Irma Lord.
A Graveside Service will be held later in the spring at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk. There will be no calling hours.
