Lettie Leah Kerby, named in part for her paternal grandmother, Leah Presada (Smith) Kerby, was born very prematurely in Morenci, Arizona while her parents were on their way from Bush Valley (now Alpine) Arizona to Eden, Arizona in the L.D.S. enclave of the Safford/Pima area. The rugged crossing was contributory to her premature birth and Lettie lived but nine days. Her mother, due to the rigors of the trip and the birth, died 2 months later after having arrived in Pima, Arizona. Little Lettie traveled with her parents to be buried in Pima.
