Broadcasting executive. He was the first director-general of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). He served there for 16 years, until 1938. He was present in the room in 1936 when the former King Edward VIII gave a speech on radio following his abdication that day. He continued a career of public service and retired to Scotland.
