James Edward Burns, age 88, of Walland, went home to be with his Lord September 7, 2017.

He passed away at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans' Home, Knoxville.

He was the recipient of a Purple Heart as a wounded war veteran in the Korean War. He was retired from General Motors.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances; daughter, Janet Houston; mother, Ida Burns; sisters, Myrtis Marie Burns, Rachel Myers, and Helen York; brothers, Columbus, Marvin, Rondie, Levi and Samuel.

Survivors: wife, Gladys; son, James E. Burns, Jr.; daughter, Patricia (John) Meggert; grandchildren, David Houston, Christine Houston; several step sons, step grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews. With special mention of nephew Lester Gregory and wife Christine. Both went beyond all expectations in the care of their uncle in his last days.

The family will receive friends 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Tuesday September 12, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home: 1102 Big Springs Rd., Maryville, TN with a military graveside service to follow at West Millers Cove Cemetery in Walland. All are welcome to attend the following graveside service.
