On June 29, 1943 Margie Merritt and Robert L. Abbott were married. They came to Rockdale in 1953. Margie worked as a secretary for Jack Lewis Insurance Agency in Rockdale. She continued her position when it became Brett & Lewis Insurance Agency. She later became a partner with Brett & Lewis and then purchased the business, making it Abbott Insurance Agency. She was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale, was a lifelong Democrat, and had been elected to Rockdale City Council April 3, 1976 and resigned June 19, 1979. During that time, she served as Mayor Pro Tem.
