Kathryn "Johnnie" Albers passed away on March 23, 2011. She was born on January 12, 1919 in Lougheed, Alberta to Eugene and Ruth Johnson. In 1942 Johnnie joined the Women's Army Corps and was stationed in Canada and Great Britain before her discharge in 1945. This is where she earned her nickname "Johnnie" which stuck with her for over 70 years. Adventure took her to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories where she met and married Thomas Albers. The family lived in the north for many years but eventually decided to move to Ponoka, Alberta. After Tom died in 1990, Mom moved to the Legion Arms and resided there until 2004. She then moved to Rimoka Lodge until her health failed and she required more care. The Bentley Care Centre became her home until her death. Johnnie was a life member of the Yellowknife OORP and a long time member of the Ponoka Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Many people will remember her as that cheerful little lady from the cafeteria at the Co-Op. Others will remember her from the bingo hall enjoying one of her favorite pastimes. She was predeceased by her husband Tom; her parents; brothers Alfred & Gene; and sisters Maude & Inez. She will be sadly missed by her sons Jim and Doug of Yellowknife; daughters Anne (Charles) Gathercole of Wetaskiwin, Joan (Derek) Dickau of Bentley, and Diane Albers of Red Deer. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Brenda Gathercole, Beverly (William) Stretch, Cindy (Wayne) Krick, Judie (Wes) Neumeier, Janet (Edward) Bloom, Nicole Doll, Brett Dickau and Brian (Karen) Dickau; nine great-grandchildren: Warren & Steven Krick, Nathaniel Stretch, Jordan Wolff, Parker & Mason Neumeier, Julia & Chloe Doll and Keira Dickau. Johnnie was full of pride the day she met her great-great-grandson Lucas Krick. A Funeral Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Stollery Children's Hospital. To express condolences to Johnnie's family, please visit www.womboldfuneralhomes.com.
