Thomas (Tom) Lee Thornhill, 80, of Georgetown, passed away on September 1, 2017 after having received loving care by the staff of Georgetown Living.

Per Tom’s request, there will be a Beer and Barbeque Celebration of Life for him at Sun City on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 4:00 pm. Please check back for more details as the date approaches.

Tom has resided in Georgetown for the last 20 years after spending most of his adult life having lived in various towns in Texas. He was born in Abilene, Texas to his loving parents, E.A. (Bill) and Esther Thornhill on March 25, 1937.

After earning a Master of Education from West Texas State University and a Bachelor of Science of Education from the University of Georgia, Tom became a School Administrator and a Coach. To say that he was “just a coach” is an understatement. At one time in Tom’s life, he was the Principal, Teacher and Coach for 90 students, grades 1-12. The school in Quail, Texas was destroyed by a tornado and the kids traveled on a bus with a sign saying, “Have team will travel” because they had no place to play. He was involved in various roles in education and athletics in Atlanta, Houston, Lubbock, Lamesa, Quail, Canyon, Amarillo, Vega, and Hart. He was Assistant Principal at Tascosa High School from 1982-1990 and Director of the Youth Center of the High Plains after retiring from Amarillo ISD.

Since retiring to Sun City, he stayed busy for several years by working as an administrator and coach in Austin ISD and Jarrell ISD. He volunteered for Sun City, loved to play golf and go out to eat with his friends on a regular basis. When given the opportunity to teach at Senior University, he lectured on slavery and racism which was near and dear to his heart.

In his youth, Tom was an outstanding athlete. He began his college career at Schreiner University and was selected to play on the All American Junior College Football team. Later he transferred to the University of Georgia where he received the opportunity to play in the Orange Bowl of 1960 alongside Fran Tarkenton. On April 5, 2014, Tom was inducted into the Schreiner University Athletic Hall of Honor in recognition of Outstanding Athletic Achievement.

On July 26, 1997 he married Cleta (C.C.) Reed in Amarillo, Texas. They are members of the Wellspring United Methodist Church in Georgetown.

Preceding Tom in death were his father, mother, brother, Bill Thornhill and his first wife, Mildred Baggett Thornhill.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Cleta (C.C.) Thornhill of Georgetown; sons: Scott Thornhill of Amarillo, Tim (Meredith) and their daughter Jordan Thornhill of Amarillo, Patrick (Shauna) and their children, Avery and Grayson Thornhill of Amarillo; stepson, Mike (Lisa) and their children Jorden Reed and Bailey (Kevin) Mennona and their children Kinley and Blair of Keller, TX and Virginia Beach, VA ; grandson, Landon Reed of Keller, TX; stepdaughter, Misty (Jeff) Taylor and their children, Marley and Jensen, of Ft. Worth, TX. He is also survived by his second wife, Judith Gifford.

In lieu of flowers the family request that you send donations to the Red Cross or Salvation Army to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
