Son of Alpheus and Clarissa (Howard) Williams.


On 25 Jul 1861 William mustered into service with Company H of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was 26 years and 2 months old.


William, James, and Origen B. Williams, brothers, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.


William's future brother-in-law, Nathaniel C. Putnam, also served with him in the same regiment, but Nathaniel would not live to see his sister married in 1863.


On 4 Nov 1862 he ended military service at Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia, due to disability.
