James was the son of John Hamilton and Mary (Patton) Estes. When he was 2 years old, he lived in Brownsboro, Washington County, Tennessee, with his parents and five brothers and sisters. By 1880, they had moved to Barren Twp, Independence County, Arkansas. By about 1891 he was in Texas where he met and married Beulah Shirley, a daughter of James Travis and Mary Elizabeth (Fair) Shirley. James and Beulah had four children: Carl Shirley Estes, John Leonard Estes, James Patton Estes, and Clara Louise Estes.
