Lorene was born on June 2, 1918, to Floyd County pioneers, Albert Milton Battey and Maggie Wright Battey. She grew up in the Lakeview Community and attended school there, then transferred to Floydada High School for her senior year, where she graduated in 1934. She was married to William Orval Newberry on Jan. 16, 1938. They lived most of their lives in Floyd County, except for a short time in Wichita Falls, Texas, and California, returning to Floydada after Orval was discharged from the Navy following World War II. They had two children, raised their family and were active members of the community. Lorene was a homemaker and an active member of First Baptist Church, Floydada. She volunteered for many years with Spirit of Sharing, the Floyd County Museum and other community organizations.
Lorene is survived by daughter, DeAnne Newberry, of Weatherford, Texas; son, Robert Dale and Pat Newberry of Lamesa, Texas; four grandchildren, RexAnne and Kelly Davis of Weatherford, Texas, Von and Rhonda Jones of Sugar Land, Texas, Rob and Cindy Newberry of San Jose, Calif., and Sarah and Patrick True of San Antonio, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Amy Davis, Connor, Aaron and Ethan Jones, Lili and Liam Newberry, and Ella True; and sister, Faye Bertrand of Floydada, Texas.
Lorene was preceded in death by Orval in 1991; her parents; and two brothers, Thurman and Wayne Battey.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Floydada Senior Center, Alzheimer's Association or to the charity of your choice.
∼FLOYDADA - Services for Lorene Newberry, 93, are pending with Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Floydada. Mrs. Newberry died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, in Weatherford.
