Daughter of Richard Simpson and Mary (nee Wild) Thomson. Emily Susan Thomson was engaged to be married at one time (this story has been passed down through generations). No one knows what became of her suitor/fiancé.

She was instrumental in taking care of her niece, Ina Mabel Jones Prevatt, when the family lost its patriarch (and Emily's brother-in-law), Tilford Jefferson Jones. In November 1940, she moved to Miami, Florida and, then, Daytona Beach, Florida to be with her niece, (Ina) Mabel.
