Pastor Doris Foltz Arnold
May 2, 1926 - December 15, 2013
Doris Evelyn Foltz, daughter of Xenia and Irene Foltz, was born on May 2, 1926 in Hagerstown Maryland where she grew up until she was ready for higher education. In 1948, Rev. Arnold earned a B.A. degree at Lynchburg College, and that year was ordained into the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) Ministry. During her time at Lynchburg College, she served as assistant chaplain at the Lynchburg School for the Retarded. She also served as chaplain at the Virginia Industrial School for Delinquent Girls, Bon Air, 1948-51.
Rev. Arnold continued her quest to serve the church by enrolling in the Lexington Theological Seminary. She was quite proud to declare that she was the only female student at that time. After completing a Master’s degree in Religious Education, she served as an associate minister of the Paris (Kentucky) Christian Church until 1955.
While there, she was the choir director for three choirs: children, youth and adult. On April 1, 1953 in Beaver Creek, Maryland, she married Raymond M. Arnold. Together, they studied, traveled, and served in various capacities until their retirement.
Diverse employment experiences coupled with continuing education prepared her for service to and through the church. For example, Doris worked as an education supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY from 1956 to 1983.
During that time period, she went on to earn a second Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City in 1964 and completed doctoral studies at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL in 1968. During her tenure as an education supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center, she was a member of the Mentally Retarded Educators Association and served as its secretary from 1957 to 1983.
On October 1, 1978, Doris was granted a License to Preach and was appointed to the Dover Plains and the South Dover United Methodist Church of Wingdale, NY from 1978 to 1981; then for seven years (1982-1989) to the Dover Plains church. Rev. Arnold retired on July 1, 1989, but served for a year at the Gallatin Reformed Church in Gallatin, NY.
Raymond Arnold died in 1998, and Doris remained in her home until 2012 when she was taken in by her primary care giver. There, she received excellent, loving care until her death on December 15, 2013. Even though she had no surviving family members, Rev. Arnold had a small number of friends who visited her regularly. Her primary care giver, who recently became a citizen of the United States, said many times, “Rev. Arnold taught me so much about life and how to get along in a strange land.”
A memorial service was held on December 28, 2013 at the Dover Plains United Methodist Church, the Reverend Carl B. Franson officiated. Burial took place at the Beaver Creek Cemetery in Beaver Creek, Maryland.
