Robert Edwin Baker was born on August 4, 1920 in Valentine, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Edwin and Marie Baker. Robert had one older sister, DeDe. Robert spent his childhood in Tobias, Nebraska and Hebron, Nebraska.

While the Baker family was living in Tobias, Robert earned all his money delivering newspapers to the small community. The Baker family left Tobias and moved to Hebron and then later on to York, NE. While living in Hebron, Bob was accidentally run over by a Model T Ford, breaking his hip. While in York, Edwin opened a barber and beauty salon. By this time, Bob had three younger sisters, Patty, Peggy, and Mitzi. Bob graduated from York High School in 1937.

In 1939, Bob and his friends left for military training in Little Rock, AR. They were there for one year before being moved to the west coast where they were stationed for 2 ½ years, then spending a brief time on the east coast before being deployed overseas where they served in France and Germany. Bob, who was a Staff Sergeant, arrived home in 1945 and met the love of his life, Wanda Lee “Bonnie” Kerwood. One evening, Bob offered to give Bonnie and her date a ride home. Bob decided to drop her date off first, and then take Bonnie home. Two months later, in 1946, Bob and Bonnie were married and two years later, their first son, Bobby David was born in York, NE. The family moved from York to Cozad where Bob took a job as the parts manager for Wells Ford Motor Co. Then in 1955 they made their new home in Burlington, CO.

In October 1955, Barry Lee was born, making the Baker family complete. In partnership with George and Aldean Pischke, the Bakers purchased the Ford Garage from Perry Miller located on the corner or 13th and Martin. Two years later the dealership enlarged and moved to the Rose Avenue location where Vince’s Automotive is now located. In 1962 the dealership was sold to Edmund Ebeler and the Baker’s purchased a partnership in “The Men’s Shop” with C.E. McCartney and Harold McCune. Later Bob purchased McCartney’s interest.

Bob and Bonnie were active members of the Methodist Church serving on many committees and boards. Bob was an active member of the business community serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Pres of the Lions Club, Master of the Masonic Lodge, President of the Golf Club and Housing Board. His primary hobby was art. Any medium but mostly oil portraits of children.

He would ride his motorcycle in the country and paint old farm houses in watercolor. Most pleasurable times were spent playing golf with Barry and hot air ballooning with Bobby. Later his favorite pastime was coffee and cruising with Bill Krueger. In the early 1980’s, Bob bought a motor home and followed his son Bobby on the Hot Air Ballooning races as a crew member.

Survived by 2 sons, Bobby (Jean) of Vacaville, CA and Barry Lee (Val) of Ft. Collins, 2 grandchildren, Bryson (Mel) – Breanne Sutton (Russell) of Ft. Collins, and 4 great grandchildren, Brecken, Brayden, Hayven and Rayla. Three sisters, Pat Kazilek of Phoenix, AZ, Peggy Clark, of Williamsburg, VA and Mitzi Robbins of Salt Lake City, UT. Many nephews and nieces.

Memorial contributions may be made out to the Burlington Public Library or United Methodist Church in c/o Brown Funeral Home, PO Box 475, Burlington, CO. Published by the Brown Funeral Homes, Eads, Co.
