Gwendolyn Florence Hilda Day passed away on August 18, 2017 at the age of 90.

Gwen Day was born June 7,1927 in Marbleton, Quebec, to Bertram and Florence Gilbert. Bertram was a POW for four years in Japan, dying in hospital shortly after returning to Canada in 1946.

Gwen worked tirelessly all her life supporting the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association. Gwen described her mother as a noble woman who raised four children - Gwen, Bruce, Dawn and Beverly, and a step-daughter, Joan Cook. Thanks to an IODE scholarship, Gwen was one of the first women in her village to attend university, Bishops, specializing in French. In later years she was in high demand as substitute teacher.

She was married to Stockwell (Sr.) for 56 years, from 1949 until his death in 2005 and raised six children: Deborah, Stockwell, Nick, Abigail, Rebecca and Matthew.

Her passion for volunteering led her to support Red Cross, YMCA, her local church and the Canadian Executive Service Organization in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Gwen and Stockwell successfully pursued a number of ventures in their lifetime, including the wonderful family-centered years they enjoyed as owners of the Overlander Lodge near Hinton, Alberta.

Gwen enjoyed her final years in the community of Mill Bay, BC, surrounded by friends and family.

In her own words:

“At the age of 90 I will record a bit of what I did in those past years ...nothing spectacular... my six children from my very happy 56 year marriage to Stockwell Day did it all.

My first child, Deborah, owned her spectacular Montessori School for over 20 years in West Edmonton. Deborah taught 3 generations of children who still bring their children to a Montessori School system.

My second child, Stockwell, went into politics and was pretty spectacular with smart conservative work. He still goes around helping people, being spectacular with his kindness.

My third child, Nicholas, had a varied career and occupations. He is a spectacular careworker and devotes his life to taking care of people.

My fourth child, Abigail, has lived in England for 30 years and is a a full time professor at London University. She recently wrote a spectacular book which brought attention to the wonderful women who have kept the Anglican churches open around the world.

My fifth child, Rebecca, teaches grammar, writing and coaches at Brentwood College School and takes spectacular care of her students, her family, her friends and me.

My sixth child, Mathew, has raised 4 wonderful children and is a well known spectacular entertainer in Edmonton. He is a truly unique person.

My father Bertram was a prisoner of war in Japan for 4 years, then died after returning home in 1946. My mother Florence was a noble woman, raising 4 children on her own, surrounded with her church and the help that goes along with a small community like Marbleton, Québec. We were poor I suppose but we didn’t know it. Our lives were enriched by attendance at church and the older people who looked out for us. I was one of the first girls from the village who went to university thanks to an IODE scholarship.

I was passionate about volunteering for organizations like the Red Cross, YMCA, the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association, and my church. My husband and I did projects for the Canadian Executive Service Organization in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. We worked at many ventures including the wonderful family-centered years we enjoyed as owners of the Overlander Lodge near Hinton, Alberta.

God has taken care of me for 90 years and I’m thankful for my faith within the Anglican Church. I’m looking forward to being with my husband once again, along with all the members of my family who have passed before.

My life has been blessed."

Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at St John's Church, 3295 Cobble Hill Road, Cobble Hill, BC. Reception to follow. Burial at Ladysmith Cemetery.
