Mrs. Gillette was born February 12, 1912, to Christopher H. and Ida (née Hunt) Mills at their farm on Irish Ridge at Viroqua, Wis. She graduated from Viroqua High School and attended Vernon Normal School to become a teacher. She married Lyle V. Gillette on June 28, 1933. She taught rural school at Romance Township, Vernon County, Wis.

When Lyle's job took the couple to Mankato, she began a career in the public school system's hot lunch program. She was one of the original staff members of North Mankato Junior High School as the cook-manager from 1953-1958. Her next position was the Mankato Public Schools' lunch service director; a position she held from 1958 to 1971 until her retirement.

Maybelle was an active member of Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church and its Esther Circle; was a Camp Fire leader for seven years; and was past president of the Minnesota Food Service Association.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, entertaining, bird watching, traveling, playing cards and games, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her survivors included a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Philip Cowan of Post Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; three sisters: Gladys Dodge and Margaret Schlafer--both of La Crosse, Wis. and Ruth Munsterman of Union, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1982; three daughters: Mary Jean (1934-35), Judith Ann Connelly (1940-68) and Carol May Cowan (May 1, 1936-); and four brothers.
