NEWPORT NEWS - Carroll (Marc) Marcus Cooper Jr., of Newport News, passed away Sunday, Feb. 21. He was born in Memphis, Tenn., on July 17, 1950, to Carroll Marcus Cooper Sr. and Cary Randolph Cooper. He moved to Newport News when he was 10 years old. Marc graduated from Hampton Roads Academy in 1968 and received a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1972. He was married to Jane Hazelwood Cooper on Sept. 28, 1979.

Marc had a long and distinguished career as a financial advisor with Paine Webber, Legg Mason, and Smith Barney. Recognized consistently as one of the top ranked money mangers in the state, his true passion for his job came from the opportunity to help others. Within his large circle of friends, he was admired and revered for his generosity of spirit. If anyone needed help, he would always be the first at the door without expecting anything in return. Marc considered himself to be quite humorous, and at times he was, especially when devising practical jokes to play upon his friends and family.

An avid sports fan and great competitor, Marc loved to watch his teams win and took great pleasure at beating the heck out of those foolish enough to challenge him at a card, board or sports game. He transferred his competitive nature and his love of kids to the court by coaching basketball at Hampton Roads Academy and Church League. He was known for his lack of personal vanity. Many will remember his untucked shirt tails and unintentionally popped collars. Marc was always inviting and welcoming to the hundreds of people of all ages who came to his home. His legendary hospitality has been a constant source of joy for everyone.

Marc's quiet brilliance was evident to all those who worked with him over the years. His love of reading, passed down from his mother, added richness to his life whether he was on the beach or on the couch. Everyone who crossed paths with him became a part of his life, often because he was a defender of those who could not defend themselves.

A true family man like his own father, Marc's greatest loves were his wife and children. His biggest supporter and best friend was his wife, Jane, and he always considered his children to be his greatest accomplishment. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cary. He is survived by his wife, Jane; father, Carroll; sister, Peggy Cooper Fuller; children, Jack, Nathalie, and Marcus; and a host of extended family and friends who were like family.

A memorial service honoring Marc will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News. The burial will be noon Thursday, Feb. 25, in the family graveyard at Monticello in Charlottesville. His honesty and integrity were unsurpassed and will live on in the memories of those who knew him. He was a great and loyal friend. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
