Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)

Corporal with the 1st Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders, based in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Aged 25. He was a reservist from Stellarton, NS who volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan in December 2006. Kevin was the youngest of three siblings and followed a long line of relatives, including his father, who have served in the military.

He is survived by his parents, Dexter & Karen (MacLeod) Megeney; sisters, Sherrie Lawand (Simon) and Lisa Megeney (Jason); nieces: Brittany, Nadia and Christie; nephew; Bradley; soulmate, Wendy; paternal grandmother; Elizabeth Megeney, as well as extended family and many close friends. He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, George Megeney; maternal grandparents, Major Douglas and Annie MacLeod; aunts, Heather MacDonald, Nancy Sinclair; uncle and godfather, Doug MacLeod; cousin, Levi Cyr.

Cpl Megeney died after being shot in the chest while in his tent at Kandahar Airfield military base. Department of National Defence officials stated that enemy action had been ruled out and the non-combat incident is under investigation.

Cpl Megeney's sister Lisa told reporters her brother was excited to be going to Afghanistan.

"He said that he was going to help people," she said. "He wanted to turn things around, so the Afghanis could live like we live.… He took so much pride in it."

Repatriation ceremony held March 9, 2007 at CFB Trenton. Funeral with full military honours held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Stellarton NS, on Friday, March 16, 2007 with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Oct 25, 2007 - A Canadian army reservist has been charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and negligent performance of duty in the death of Cpl Megeney. In July 2008 it was announced a General Court Martial will convene at the first available date. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for March 17, 2009.

July 30, 2009 - A military jury has found Cpl Matthew Wilcox, a 24 year-old reservist, guilty of criminal negligence causing death and negligent performance of a military duty in the death of Cpl Megeney. He was found not guilty of manslaughter. He was later sentenced to four years in prison and dismissal from the Canadian Forces.
