David Alan Smith, a son of Francis and Libbie Smith was born in Dallas, Texas on 11 March 1947 and, after a long and courageous battle against brain cancer, passed away on 22 August 2010 in Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.

David spent most of his adult life in the Austin, Texas area, where he graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in engineering and memberships in Pi Tau Sigma, a mechanical engineering honor society and Tau Beta Pi, an all engineering honor society. He was a gifted and well-respected engineer and worked for several local companies including Texas Instruments, Austin, V Tel, and Active Power, Inc. He then created his own engineering consulting business and was co-owner of Murffy's Nursery in Roud Rock, Texas. He lived in a very nice home in Cedar Park, Texas.

David had a passion for cars and racing and, since the 1960s, was an active member of the Texas Spokes Sports Car Club. He was a two-time winner of the Spokes Driver of the Year award.

David was also a gymnast for the Dallas Sokol Club during his school years in Dallas and then, while attending the University of Texas in Austin, he was a member of the UT Gymnastic Team.

David was a member of the New Hope Community Church in Round Rock, Texas and was active in his local community. He was a member of the Texas Instruments Austin Alumni and the Texas Instruments, Austin Retirees Club. His quiet and generous spirit will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
