Bessie Frances Capps was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky, on 8 Jun 1904 to George Washington Capps and the former Hettie Frances Long.

Bessie Capps married Dewey Ester Spears (listed as Ester Spear) on 13 Oct 1921 in Celina, Clay County, Tennessee, when she was 17 years old. The marriage place was the usual one for people living in southern Cumberland County, KY. The couple moved shortly thereafter to Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

On 24 Nov 1922, Bessie gave birth to her first child, George Dewey Spears (listed as George Dewie Speares on the birth certificate). The family was then living at 954 West Pearle [sic,Pearl] Street in Indianapolis at the time.

Unfortunately, George Dewey Spears died on 2 Dec 1922. He only lived eight days before his death at the City Hospital in Indianapolis. He died of "Pulmonary Hemorrhage" with "Congenital Malfunction of Lungs" as a contributing factor. He was buried on 4 Dec 1922 in the Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Bessie gave birth to her second child on 18 Mar 1924 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Bessie named her baby girl Ann Estelle Spears.

Bessie gave birth to her second girl on 10 May 1926 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. She was named Bessie May Spears.

Unfortunately, Bessie Frances Spears did not survive the birth of her daughter. She died on 23 May 1926, almost two weeks after giving birth. The family was then living at 508 West Henry Street in Indianapolis.

The death certificate indicates that Dr. Claude B. Hadden attended Bessie Frances Spears from 10 May 1926 until her death on 23 May 1926 at 8:15 pm. Bessie was then at the Indianapolis City Hospital. The cause of death appears to be "Retained Secaersaian." However, the middle part of the word is obscured. It is also possible that the second word in the cause of death is misspelled or it is a term no longer in use. Perhaps it should be Caesarian. If so, it is possible that Bessie's baby was delivered via Caesarian Section. In any event, it appears that Bessie may have died when parts of the placenta remained in the uterus and caused blood poisoning. The "contributory" cause of death was "Septicemia," which is defined as "blood poisoning, especially that caused by bacteria or their toxins." Her date of birth was listed as 8 Jun 1904. She was buried in the Floral Park Cemetery on 25 May 1926. The parents were listed as George and Bessie Capps. George is correct, but Bessie is not. The mother's maiden name was Hettie Frances Long. The informant was Dewey Spears.

Bessie was buried at the Floral Park Cemetery on 26 May 1926, according to cemetery records. (Her death certificate indicates she was buried on 25 May 1926.) The cemetery is located at 425 North Holt Road in Indianapolis, Indiana, 46222.

Bessie's death was devastating to her husband Dewey. The daughter Bessie May Spears was allowed to be adopted by another family and Ann Spears, who was two years old, went to live with Dewey Ester Spears' sister Delia Scott in Granite, Greer County, Oklahoma. The Scott family ended up raising Ann.
