Jean graduated from Annunciation High School in Detroit in 1940. Her father didn't see the benefit in sending her to college, even though she had been accepted. She worked as a clerk/typist for the IRS until leaving to join the US Navy after she turned 21. She enlisted the same day as her younger brother Don. She fell in love while stationed at NAS Norman Oklahoma and there she married Robert Dunlap, of Arkansas, shortly before VJ Day. Jean served to the close of the war and was discharged in late 1945. She returned to Detroit and found a home to rent while she waited for her new husband's discharge to come through. They eventually had a family of six children.
Both sets of her grandparents were named Thomas and Elizabeth.
