Lloyd Bell

April 4, 1924 - Aug. 18, 2017

Lloyd Dwain Bell of Dayton, passed away at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla on August 18, 2017, at the age of 93.

Lloyd was born on the family farm outside of Gentryville, Missouri, the oldest of six children of Elda and Nancy Leona (Freeman) Bell.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Hubbard Rogg Funeral Home at 111 S 2nd in Dayton.

Lloyd grew up on the family farm in Missouri, attending Jewel Grade School. He then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Lloyd was 18 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the European, African Middle Eastern Theater.  Lloyd received three bronze stars for the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland Campaign.  He was honorably discharged, Feb 15, 1946.  After the war, Lloyd and his cousin Dick Ferguson came west together and landed in Columbia County, where another Missouri cousin Charlie Dobbs had already put down roots.  It was there Lloyd met his love, Joanna (Jody) Porter and on October 1, 1947, they were married in Lewiston, Idaho. Married for 69 years, the couple had two children Delbert Ray and Joyce Elaine Bell.

Lloyd was a capable farm hand, working the land for Don Lowe and later for Charles Mead.  In 1961 the family moved from Starbuck to Dayton where Lloyd began work at the Columbia County road department. He spent 25 years with the county, retiring in 1986.

Lloyd loved horses and hound dogs, but his passion was thoroughbred racing. For 44 years he owned and raced horses on Washington and Oregon tracks. The most memorable horse was Kudono, purchased from Donohue Farms. Kudono had a successful racing career, setting two track records at Longacres in Seattle. Many races at Dayton Days featured a Bell horse. Lloyd was Dayton Days parade marshal in 1987. When Lloyd wasn't horse racing he was fishing on the Snake River or Tucannon Lakes.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jody; his son, Delbert Ray (Kay) Bell; and his daughter, Joyce Elaine (Bob) Spangler; his brothers, Wayne and Dewey; and his sisters, Helene Dunaway and half sister Lula Bell (John) Clarke; two granddaughters, Brenda (Jon) Dahmen and Jenny Bell; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jean Fogel and Christine Abston.

Those who wish may contribute to the American Legion in Dayton through Hubbard Rogg or to a charity of donor's choice.
