Cottageville Mrs Irene Wilkes Ackerman wife of Paul W Ackerman and a retired school teacher died in Colleton Regional Hospital Monday.
Funeral services will be held at Cottageville United Methodist Church at 3 pm Wednesday. Burial, directed by Parker Funeral home will be in Cottageville Cemetery.
Mrs Ackerman had taught for 42 years in Colleton and Charleston County schools before her retirement. She served as a supervisor of Colleton County schools and was assistant principal of North Charleston Elementary School for five years.
She was born in Colleton County a daughter of the Rev Eli Alston Wilkes and Mrs Mattie Byers Wilkes. Mrs Ackerman attended Lander College and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was listed in "Personalities of the South."
She was a member of Cottageville United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of its Pastor Parish Relations Committee.
Surviving are her husband of Cottageville two sons P. Walter Ackerman Jr of Ashton and T. Donald Ackerman of DeRidder La; a daughter Mrs Richard J. Grimsley of North Charleston three sisters Mrs Fred Winters of Florence, Mrs Bill Arnold of Princeton and Miss Azilee Wilkes of Chester; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
