He was married to Flora Belle Magruder (1911–1998), daughter of Homer Cote Magruder (1878–1963) and Flora Ellen (McClellan) Magruder (1884–1952).
J L was 53 years old when he passed away on September 28, 1965 at an infirmary in Nashville, Davidson County.
Survivors included his wife, a son, sisters Eva Proudfoot, Mary Proudfoot and Mrs James England, brothers George Proudfoot and Miles Proudfoot and two grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
