He was an oilfield worker, homebuilder, excavator, and remodeler. He also raised longhorns. His favorite vocation was being a pastor. He was an avid reader and biblical historian. Johnnie was a member of Burkett Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Lynda Gail Hughes, and brothers: Leslie Harold Hughes, Joie Dave Hughes and Billie Mack Hughes.

Johnnie is survived by his wife Deloria Hughes, sons: Dallas Hughes and wife Tonya of Midlothian, Jeff Hughes and wife Cindy of Ozark, MO, grandchildren; Lance Hughes and Casey Hughes of Peoria, IL, and Gage Hughes of Ozark, MO, sister: Sherrie Lynn Templeton and husband Terry of Granbury and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
