Norma Jean Lester, 78, of South Hill, VA, formerly of Oceana passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017 in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

She was born on March 5, 1939 in Kegley, WV a daughter of the late Robert Winton "Wint" McKinney (1903-1975) and Lula Shrewsbury-McKinney (1907-1980).

After graduation from Oceana High School in May 1956, Norma went to work for the FBI in Washington, DC. Months later she wed her sweetheart Jimmy R. Lester and moved to New York, where he was stationed in the USAF. She then went to work at the United States Military Academy at West Point as a secretary to General Westmoreland the Superintendent.

In 1964, they returned to Toney Fork, WV to reside. They were blessed with two sons, after 14 years of marriage, Barry Lester and Brady Lester. She was a loving, caring wife, mother and Nana.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a sister, Vesta "Faye" McKinney-Bailey (1930-2005). Norma was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include her loving husband of 61 years, Jimmy Ray Lester (B. 1938) whom she married on October 21, 1956 in Oceana, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1956, Page 342, Application Date: October 16, 1956); two sons, Barry Lester of South Hill, VA and Brady Lester of Piedmont, SC; six grandchildren, Peyton Lester, Annika Lester, Ashton Lester, Emily Lester, Brianna Lester and Brady Lester, Jr.; her beloved sister-in-law, Virginia Lester-Toler and her husband Ronnie Toler; several nephews and a niece; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, Kopperston, WV with Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV.
