Joseph W. Anderson, 97, formerly of Arkansas City, died Saturday (July 29, 2017) at his niece’s home in Gulfport, Florida. Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday (August 26, 2017) at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery.
Cremation has been effected.
Joe was born March 26, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Joseph and Beulah (Hosler) Anderson. He was reared and educated in Kansas City and Roselle Park, NewJersey, graduating from Rosell Park High School in 1938. He later attended Rutgers University and Iowa State College (ISU), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1948. Joe served in the United States Army during WWII. Joe married Eleanor L Baker on June 19, 1942, at Elizabeth, New Jersey. The couple made their home in New Jersey, Iowa and Texas before moving to Arkansas City in 1963.
Joe worked as a manager for military programs for the General Electric Company for many years. During Joe’s time as a manager of the GE military programs, Joe oversaw the installation of the first jet engine on a helicopter. A major forward step for today’s helicopters and for General Electric. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Trustee and Elder. His civic service to Arkansas City include, Commissioner, Mayor, Arkansas City Memorial (SCKMC) Trustee and Chairman of the Board, also the Board of Directors and President of the Arkansas City Country Club, member of the Ta Chi Social and Pi Tau Sigma Honorary Mechanical Engineer’s Fraternities, The Iowa State Alumni Association, Arkansas City Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow, and as City wide Tribute; April 26, 2001 was proclaimed at “Joe Anderson Day” in Arkansas City.
Survivors include his sister Jewel Louise Eberle of Gulfport, Florida; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of nearly 71 years Eleanor, and brothers Gary and Clarence Anderson.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
