ILA ROSE OSBORNE
Ila Rose Osborne, 82, of Albany, Mo., and formerly of Bethany, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at North Kansas City Hospice. She was born Feb. 7, 1932 in Cedar, Iowa, to Dale and Alta (Lane) Lappin.
While growing up in Cedar, she played basketball for Cedar High School and was rated as best scoring forward in the league as touted by the local press. She led her team to Mahaska County Iowa basketball championship. She continued participating in basketball during secretarial college and also joined a regional softball league.
Her working career started as a secretary with the Department of Army in Washington, D.C., and for the 6th District congressman from South Center, Iowa. In 1953, she was elected the Cherry Blossom Queen while living in Washington.
She married Paul “Bud” Osborne on Jan. 15, 1956. With Bud working in retail, they eventually moved to Bethany, where Ila worked for various attorneys as a legal secretary.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bethany. She served as a volunteer for the Red Cross Swimming Program. In her free time, she enjoyed her bridge groups and playing golf. In retirement the couple moved to Albany. She spent her time bird watching, reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching game shows, the Kansas City chiefs and University of Missouri sports, flowers and gardening, but most of all traveling to visit her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, Paul “Bud” Osborne; two daughters, Leslie Smith of Bethany and Deena (Jim) Gonzales of Rockwall, Texas; two sons, David (Josephine) Osborne of Greer, S.C., and Blake Osborne of Bethany; two sisters, Lillian Hynik of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Lola (Sanford) Owens of Oskaloosa, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Donna Lappin of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. The body has been cremated.
