Alice Hoff was born to Joseph and Laura (Rausch) VanWell on January 20, 1938, in Bowdle, SD. She grew up in Hoven, SD, and graduated from Hoven High School. On June 24, 1957, she married Eugene "Gene" Koehn in Hoven. They lived and farmed in Hoven for seven years until 1964. There were six children born to this union: Laurie, Deb, Peggy, Bob, Bonnie, and Rich. Then they moved to Watertown and Gene started selling farm equipment. Alice traveled with Gene about 3 months each year working the state fairs and shows. Alice and Gene enjoyed family vacations, including to Wisconsin Dells, Yellowstone, St. Louis, MO and a few trips on their own to Mexico and Alaska. The latter trip included picking up hitchhikers that went almost the entire journey with them and who they received cards from for many years afterwards. They loved Alaska so much that they sold their car to stay longer and flew back at a later date! They celebrated 22 years of marriage together before Gene died on July 13, 1979, of a heart attack, at age 46. Alice sold the farm and livestock and moved to Watertown in 1981.

Alice was a seamstress extraordinaire working out of her home and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She had sewn baby blankets, clown costumes, vestments for various priests throughout the diocese, and wedding attire. Mom was an usher/greeter and Eucharistic Minister at church. She was active in the T.E.C., R.E.C., and Cursillo programs in the Sioux Falls Diocese. She facilitated the Widowed Person Service, sang in the Sweet Adelines Choral Group, enjoyed playing cards, and was an election worker. Alice enjoyed making and selling lawn ornaments, which all the kids had to hand trim around in their younger years, which led all her children to hate lawn ornaments! She was an avid gardener, and taught all of her girls how to can and preserve fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed hosting large family gatherings of family and friends.

Alice met William "Bill" Hoff, a widower with five children, in 1986 on a blind date set up by Bill's sister, Lois, and Alice's daughter, Deb. Love bloomed and grew, and they married September 3, 1988, blending their two large families. They lived on an acreage with a huge meticulously kept yard and gardens. They were very active in Shriner activities, including being Shrine Clowns. They loved dancing, grew pumpkins, collected angels, and enjoyed bus trips together. Bill passed away on October 23, 2020, from Covid, after 32 years of marriage.
