Born June 10, 1930 in Summit Point, WV, David Rowland was the son of Clifford and Gertrude Crim Rowland. David attended public schools in Jefferson County and went on to receive a B.A. at West Virginia University and an M.S. degree at the University of Kentucky (UK). He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Beadle and Bumble Club, and UK Fellows.
During fifty years of endeavors preceding retirement, he worked as a farmhand, construction worker, freight trucker, public library director, and as a businessman. He built the second branch library system in the nation for the State of Virginia. He, his late wife, Doris Benson Rowland, and their children created a home business named Upstart, which led to decades of providing highly imaginative library and reading promotionals to libraries and schools nationwide, and helping generations of children to love reading.
Surviving relatives include daughters Mary Ludwig and Susan DeFelice, a son, David Benson Rowland, and grandsons Alexander Ludwig and Ronald DeFelice III. Sisters Louise King and Barbara Glassford preceded their brother in death.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Summit Point Library's South Jefferson Building Fund at P.O. Box 17, Summit Point, WV 25446. A long time supporter of the library, David donated the land for its construction.
"Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and in fact, is nobody's business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy".
-Thomas Merton
