Dixie was the daughter of Marvin and Mary Dornbos, and a graduate of Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah. She attended Weber State College (now University), earning her B.S. before going on to Central Michigan University for her M.S.

Dixie retired from federal service at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and served as a contracting officer with the F-16, C-17, and Joint Helmet Program. She was active in the American Woman Business Association and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she enjoyed serving as Primary President. Dixie was a member of the Mid-Ohio Street Stangs (MOSS), where her 2001 Mustang Cobra ("Wild Grandma") won awards. Her greatest love was her family, though shopping at Talbots was up there on her list.

At the time of her passing, Dixie was survived by her husband of 47 years, Timothy, her four children and their spouses, one sister, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and wonderful close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Gary James.
