Jack D. Barrett, age 92 and a long-time resident of Morningside Assisted Living, passed away at Willson Hospice House on April 8, 2016. Mr. Barrett was born August 28, 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mr. Barrett was a loving and devoted husband to Mary Lunsford Barrett, who passed away in 2008. Mr. Barrett was a caring and loving father of three daughters: Leigh Barrett Krautler and husband William of The Villages, Florida; Joyce Barrett Otazo of St. Petersburg, Florida; and Cathy Barrett Fornes and husband Michael of Walton Hills, Ohio. He was "Granddad" to Jim Krautler, Bill Krautler, Mark Krautler and wife Vineeta, Sam Moore and wife Jenny, Elizabeth Funk and husband John, Mary Burton and husband Steve, Will Moore, Connor Crosby, and Mary Cailin Crosby. In addition, he had eleven great-grandchildren.
In 1941, Mr. Barrett joined the U.S. Navy, serving our country with valor and unwavering dedication during World War II and beyond. He was stationed aboard the U S S Yorktown (CV-5) that was sunk in the Battle of Midway in 1942. He continued his naval career at stations around the globe, earning numerous service awards. During this time, Mr. Barrett earned a Bachelor's Degree from College of William and Mary.
Following retirement from active military duty in 1960, Mr. Barrett joined the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as a federal bank examiner. After retiring from the FDIC, Mr. Barrett assumed leadership positions at First State Bank of Albany, Georgia; First South Bank of Ashburn, Georgia; and Planter's and Citizen's Bank of Camilla, Georgia.
Mr. Barrett was an active member in many area charitable and service organizations and a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer.
